Red Back discovers more gold near Chirano

Vancouver –Stream sediment and soil sampling, trenching and drilling has led to the discovery of fourteen gold deposits on Red Back Mining’s (RBI-T) 5,000 sq. km land holdings in Ghana, West Africa. The company is working on ways to increase gold resources in an effort to extend the life of its Chirano mine, currently under construction and scheduled to begin production in September this year.

The company has completed 5,600 metres of a planned 10,000-metre drill program it started in November, and is focused on targets at and around Chirano.Geologically, the drilling focused on the Bibiani shear zone and the Chirano shear zone – a splay off Bibiani. The Bibiani shear zone hosts the multi-million oz. Bibiani gold mine 25 km north of Chirano, while the Chirano shear zone hosts the company’s plus 1 million oz. of gold at Chirano.

Red Back’s new discoveries include the Kolua, Paboase West and Ekyuiabo soil anomaly.Drilling at the Kolua prospect, 400 metres west of the Chirano shear and 1.5 km south of the Suraw deposit, has turned up a new deposit within the Chirano granite complex, with a strike length of over 250 metres.

Reverse circulation drilling returned 8 metres of 3.08 grams gold per tonne, beneath a trenched interval grading 11 metres of 1.13 grams gold; and 23 metres of 2.17 grams gold (including 7 metres of 4.90 grams gold) under a trenched interval grading 9 metres of 2.3 grams gold.

Drill-testing of the Paboase West prospect, situated 400 metres west of the Paboase deposit, returned 11 metres of 2.18 grams gold and 9 metres of 1.47 grams gold. This prospect which is still open to the west, was outlined through soil sampling, trenching and two previous holes. At the Ekyuiabo gold-arsenic anomaly, 2 km east of Chirano, drilling turned up 8 metres of 2.91 grams gold and 8 metres of 6.04 grams gold (including 4 metres at 11.5 grams gold on the same section), 18 metres of 1.07 grams gold and 18 metres at 1.20 grams gold.

The Ekyuiabo anomaly extends over 6 km and is situated on a major structural jog on the Chirano shear. Red Back believes that the Ekyuiabo is particularly significant owing to its geological similarities to Anglo-Ashanti’s Bibiani mine.

Regionally, the company is active at Bibiani North, Enchi, Akyem and Bole, where exploration is focusing on identifying and upgrading anomalous targets for drill testing. Trenching is underway to prepare for drilling scheduled to start in April.
