Red Back finds gold near Chirano

Vancouver — Sampling, trenching and drilling by Red Back Mining (RBI-V) have uncovered 14 new gold deposits on a 5,000-sq.-km land position in Ghana.

The work program is part of an effort to expand resources and extend the life of the company’s Chirano gold mine, now under construction and scheduled to start up in September.

The 10,000-metre drill program (more than half of which is completed) is centred on the Bibiani and Chirano shear zones. The former hosts the multi-million-ounce Bibiani gold mine, whereas the latter hosts the 1-million-ounce-plus Chirano deposit.

The Chirano gold deposits occur in a long, narrow intrusion at regular intervals along a mineralized zone several kilometres long and up to 70 metres thick.

Red Back’s new discoveries include the Kolua, Paboase West and Ekyuiabo prospects.

Drilling at Kolua, 400 metres west of the Chirano shear and 1.5 km south of the Suraw deposit, turned up a new deposit in the Chirano granite complex. The deposit has a strike length exceeding 250 metres.

Reverse-circulation drilling returned 8 metres grading 3.08 grams gold per tonne beneath a trenched interval of 11 metres grading 1.13 grams gold, as well as 23 metres grading 2.17 grams gold (including 7 metres of 4.90 grams gold) under a trenched interval of 9 metres running 2.3 grams gold.

Testing of the Paboase West prospect returned 11 metres grading 2.18 grams gold and 9 metres grading 1.47 grams gold. This prospect, which is still open to the west, was outlined through soil sampling, trenching and two previous holes.

At the Ekyuiabo gold-arsenic anomaly, 2 km east of Chirano, drilling turned up 8 metres grading 2.91 grams gold and 8 metres of 6.04 grams gold (including 4 metres at 11.5 grams gold on the same section), 18 metres of 1.07 grams gold, and 18 metres of 1.2 grams gold.

The Ekyuiabo anomaly extends over 6 km and is said to be geologically similar to AngloGold Ashanti‘s (au-n) Bibiani mine.
