A 6.18-tonne sample from Ashton Mining of Canada‘s (ACA-T) and Quebec government-owned Soquem‘s equally-owned Renard 9 kimberlite in north-central Quebec has yielded 6.24 carats of diamonds.
The estimated grade of the sample is calculated to be 101 carats per hundred tonnes. The sample included a 3.58-carat colourless composite tetrahexahedroidal crystal.
An earlier 6.04-tonne sample from this kimberlite contained 5.56 carats of diamonds and included a 3.26-carat diamond. The two samples combined result in an estimated diamond content of 97 carats per hundred tonnes.
Ashton’s president and CEO, Robert Boyd, finds the results "very encouraging," particularly because of the presence of diamonds larger than three carats. He pointed out that this "suggests that Renard 9 could host a significant population of large diamonds."
Nine holes were drilled to collect the latest sample. Renard 9 has a known horizontal width of 25-60 metres and a strike-length of 160 metres.
The 12.2-tonne sample is not necessarily representative of the entire volume of kimberlite, which is estimated at 2.4 million tonnes.
The Foxtrot property hosts numerous kimberlites, six of these, including Renard 9, lie within a 0.5-sq.-km area. Earlier this year the modeled value of diamonds from four of these kimberlites was estimated at US$88 per carat.
