A fire has caused the temperary closure of Newmont Gold’s (NYSE) refractory ore treatment plant near Carlin, Nev.
The fire erupted in the electrostatic precipitator. A portion of the plant was undergoing completion for startup at the time.
The roaster treats high-grade refractory ores using high temperatures and low pressure. Equipment consists of a grinding mill (which continues to operate) and two roaster trains capable of treating 8,000 tons of ore per day. The roaster oxidizes sulphides and carbon contained in the ore, allowing it to be treated using normal gold recovery processes. The precipitators clean gases generated in the roasting process.
