Rubicon gets more Congo copper

Vancouver – Rubicon Minerals (RMX-T) has received further high-grade copper intercepts from drilling on the Kalukundi deposit in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

Resource drilling on the near surface oxide copper deposit has been completed, returning exceptionally high-grades including:

  • Hole K44 A 25 metre section (from 20 metres depth) testing the western limb of an anticline averaged 8.1% copper and 0.4% cobalt;
  • Hole K45 An intercept of 93 metres (from 5 metres) assayed 2.7% copper and 0.7% cobalt, including a 41 metre section grading 6% copper and 0.6% cobalt in the hole testing the full thickness of the folded succession;
  • Hole K48 Drilling cut 86 metres (from 26 metres depth) of 2.7% copper and 0.4% cobalt in the full folded sequence, including a 39 metre intercept of 4.7% copper and 0.6% cobalt.

The latest results confirm the high-grade nature of the oxide copper mineralization in the deposit plus show elevated cobalt grades. Drilling of oxide mineralization, on 50-metre centres, has shown good lateral and depth continuity having been traced over a 625-metre strike length and to a 100-metre depth. Wider spaced drilling has traced oxide copper to at least 150-metres depth.

Kalukundi holds an inferred resource of almost 17 million tonnes of 3% copper and 0.7% cobalt in four separate deposits, calculated to a depth of 150 metres. Recent drilling of over 4,300 metres in 48 holes will be incorporated into a new resource model, as part of the feasibility study scheduled to be completed by September 2005.

The deposit is situated within the Katangan Copperbelt of southern DRC and is within very close proximity to road and power infrastructure, both on the southern boundary of the property.

Primarily a gold explorer in the Red Lake camp, Rubicon holds a 35.6% interest in Africo Resources, a private B.C. company, which is earning a 75% interest in the Kalukundi deposit.
