Ben Sheppard, who presides over Ben W. Sheppard & Associates in Hayden Lake, Idaho, has won the Safety Professional of the Decade Award. The honour was bestowed on him by the International Society of Mine Safety Professionals (ISMSP) at a conference in Post Falls, Idaho.
Other winners, in various categories, include: J.D. McAteer, assistant secretary of labour for the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration; Dennis Wheeler, president of Idaho’s Coeur d’Alene Mines; Frank Scavo, mining department chair at the College of Eastern Utah; Randy Tatton, manager of health and safety at Interwest Mining, a subsidiary of Portland, Ore.-based PacifiCorp; and the Appalachian Technical Institute in Jasper, Ga.
Also recognized for their achievements in mine safety were: Centralia Mining of Washington state; the Kubaka gold project in Russia, owned by Toronto-based Kinross Gold; the San Roque project in the Philippines, owned by Raytheon Ebasco Overseas; Glenrock Coal of Wyoming; and Bowden Industrial Contractors of El Paso, Tex.
