The federal and Saskatchewan governments will jointly fund a geological study of diamond-bearing rock in the Fort la Corne area, 50 km north of Prince Albert.
The federal portion of the funding is part of a $15-million, 3-year program of geoscientific research. Saskatchewan’s portion will be derived from the $920,000 increase for such reseach that was included in this year’s budget.
The announcement coincided with the open house of the Saskatchewan Geological Survey in late November in Saskatoon. More than 200 geoscientists attended the event. Among the topics discussed were digital data used to explore for deep deposits of uranium in the Athabasca Basin, mapping programs and a study of copper-zinc deposits near Creighton.
In 2001, about $30 million was spent on mineral exploration in Saskatchewan.
