The Colorado School of Mines campus in Golden will be the site of the first international symposium on the vast mineral deposits in Russia and other republics of the Soviet Union on Nov. 18-21.
“The implications of recent events in the USSR are enormous for anyone with an interest in minerals exploration and energy reserve development,” stated Poul Emsbo, the symposium’s chairman.
The 4-day event, hosted by the Colorado School of Mines’ Student Chapter of the Society of Economic Geologists, will feature more than 30 leading Soviet geologists, government experts and their western counterparts. “This will be the first time Soviet geologists will openly discuss the location and nature of valuable mineral deposits including precious metals, base metals, platinum group metals and diamonds, as well as oil and gas reserves throughout the USSR and its independent republics,” noted Emsbo. These technical presentations will be complemented by a cross-section of experts from key government institutions, the legal community and mineral resource firms active in the USSR.
“Attendees can look forward to a comprehensive update on the emerging business climate, with special emphasis on topics of interest to mining and energy company executives,” stated Emsbo.
