Striking miners shot in Johannesburg

Two security guards at a mine near Johannesburg were charged after allegedly opening fire on striking miners, killing two and injuring 14 others.

The miners had been trying to pull down a fence to gain access to the mine property at Boksburg, 14 km east of Johannesburg, when the shots were fired.

The mine is owned by East Rand Proprietary Mines and managed by Durban Roodepoort Deep.

East Rand produces 135,000 oz. gold per year and has lost about 480 oz. of production per day since the strike started in early October.

The company won a court injunction to stop about 4,000 miners from entering the mine compound. The miners, who receive 35 rand a day for dangerous work deep underground, are striking for more pay.
