Underground drilling by partners Teck Corp. and Tundra Gold Mines on property near the closed Lamaque mine at Val d’Or, Que., has intersected several strongly mineralized sections. Hole 13804, drilled from the eastern end of the 3,200-ft level crosscut, intersected three zones.
The first zone averaged 0.19 oz gold per ton across a 14.5-ft section. A second unit averaged 0.26 oz across 26.5 ft. Included in this intersection was 12.1 ft of core which assayed trace gold. However, several narrow sections of high grade core yield an over- all average of 0.26 oz, the partners calculate. The final section in the same hole intersected 14.5 ft grading 0.28 oz.
The partners note that the latter two sections are from newly discovered zones located 120 ft and 206 ft respectively from the 35 vein system. A second hole, drilled flat from the same location, cut a 6.5-ft section grading 5.78 oz. All drill intersections are close to true width, Tundra reports.
Underground work is testing sections of the 35 vein which has been drifted across 500 ft of strike. Face chip samples from 465.5 ft of drift have averaged 0.4 oz. Additional underground work will include crosscutting and drifting from the 3,000-ft and 3,400-ft levels.
The underground work is taking place from existing workings of the Lamaque mine which is owned by Teck. Although no reserves have been calculated on the adjacent property held under option by Tundra, the partners are optimistic that exploration results will allow a mineable tonnage to be outlined. If economic, the Lamaque mine could possibly be reopened in 1988.
Tundra has the right to earn a 50% interest in the property by spending $9 million over a 3-year period. The option does not include the original Lamaque mine property or mill.
