SUPPLIER’S NOTES (May 01, 1990)

A contract has been awarded by the International Magnesium Association to the Canada Centre for Mineral and Energy Technology (CANMET) for a 4-year project to study the fundamental aspects of the corrosion of magnesium. Canmet was selected after a thorough evaluation of proposals from several well-known research organizations in Europe and North America. The goal of the project is to develop alloys or procedures to further improve the resistance of magnesium to corrosion, and thus extend the range of environments in which magnesium can be used.

ESCO Corp. of Portland, Ore. has acquired the assets of Impulse Hydraulics of San Diego, Calif. Founded in 1964, Impulse is a designer and manufacturer of hydraulic hammers and attachments for construction, demolition and mining markets. Both hammers and attachments will be marketed under the esco brand name.

Goodyear Canada has announced that it will no longer rent haulage tires to the Canadian mining industry. The giant tires are produced at Goodyear’s plant in Topeka, Kansas, primarily for use on trucks that work open pit mines.

Amax Coal Co. has purchased two Marion 301-M shovels for its mines in Wyoming. To 3-pass load new 240-ton (218-tonne) trucks at the Belle Ayr mine, Amax ordered one 301-M with an 80-ton (73-tonne) payload dipper rated at 54 cu. yds. (49 cu. metres). Another shovel is being built for the Eagle Butte mine; it will be equipped with a 46-yd. dipper to 3-pass that mine’s 190-ton (172-tonne) haul trucks.

Sundstrand Corp., through its wholly owned subsidiary Sullair Corp., has completed the acquisition of Maco-Meudon, a French supplier of pneumatic tools and compressors.

Davjo Industries has acquired Macline Fittings, a Montreal-based manufacturer of small-diameter stainless steel and alloy buttweld pipe fittings. Macline will operate as a subsidiary of Ezeflow (Canada), a wholly owned subsidiary of Devjo.

O&K Orenstein & Koppel AG Germany is supplying Argyl Diamond Mines of Western Australia with two RH 200 and one RH 120 C hydraulic excavators. The RH 200 has a weight of 400 tonnes and is equipped with a shovel of 20 cubic metres; the RH 120 C has a weight of 212 tonnes and a shovel of 13 cubic metres.

The Bailey Controls group, through its parent company Elsag, has purchased controlling interest in the Industrial Controls division of Schlumberger Industries of France. A new company, Bailey SEREG, has been formed as a result and will be the platform for close co- operation between Bailey and Schlumberger in the fields of process control and industrial automation. The company will be based in Massy, a suburb of Paris. In other news, the Bailey group has recently acquired controlling interest in Pittsburgh-based Electronic Technology Systems.

A seventh service centre has been added to Peacock’s chain of equipment-repair shops across Canada. Situated in Montreal, the new operation is known as Usinages Industriels — Peacock. The company is based in Mississauga, Ont.

A 12-page, colour leaflet from Atlas Copco illustrates the company’s ROC 812HCS crawler drill series for hole diameters in the 64-to-127-mm range. Also available from the company is a leaflet illustrating the ROC 612HC-01 crawler drill, which is built for hole diameters in the 37-to-76-mm range. The leaflets are available from Atlas Copco’s Toronto offices.

Fenoplast Conveyor Belting, a division of J.H. Fenner & Co., is the exclusive distributor of Goodyear’s steel cord conveyor belts and Sensor Guard protection system throughout the U.K. Fenoplast will also provide conveyor belt splicing, and installation and service of the Sensor Guard. In Canada, Goodyear manufactures steel cord conveyor belts at its plant in Bowmanville, Ont.

Davis Controls of Oakville, Ont. and the Endress+Hauser instrumentation controls group of Switzerland have come to a new arrangement for the Canadian marketplace. E+H will estabish its own Canadian company in early summer and Davis will continue to sell E+H products as a dealer for level, flow and pressure switches.

Baker Hughes Mining Tools has completed its 100,000th drill bit, at its Grand Prairie, Tex., plant. The 6-3/4-inch-diameter rotary Tri-Cone drill bit represents more than one million hours of bit-making; it was was unveiled in a ceremony in February. With a bit of luck, the company will go on the manufacture another 100,000.

The Canadian Standards Association and D & H Corp. are asking owners of Solex Therapad heating pads to inspect them for two possible assembly deficiencies, either of which could be a shock hazard. The heat setting indicator of the switch should be inserted fully to fit flush to the switch body. In addition, the white vinyl pouch, enclosing the heating element, should be checked to ensure it is fully sealed on all adges and at the pad’s power supply cord entry location.

Torus elastomer couplings, which feature simplified installation and low maintenance requirements, have been redesigned by Falk to accommodate larger bore pipe sizes. The Torus coupling has an “inverted tire” design that shrouds and protects the U-shaped flexible connecting element.
