Stewart Group beefs up capacity

UK-based Stewart Group, a geochemical, assay, mineralogy, metallurgy, inspection and analysis service provider, is investing $1.1 million in its recently acquired mineralogy and metallurgy facility in Kamloops, B.C.

This investment in the G&T Metallurgical Services (GTMET) facility will increase the operation’s capacity and allow 24-hour turnaround times. Stewart Group acquired GTMET earlier this year, and the operation employs 75 people.

Through the investment, a new assay laboratory has been built to meet demand for metallurgical testing and consulting services over the next three years and
beyond.

“Turnaround times are of critical importance for our clients, and we are investing to ensure that these times are continually improved, without compromising on high standards of technical services,” Tom Shouldice, Stewart Group’s managing director of mineralogy and metallurgy, said.

Three new contracts for North American Energy Partners

North American Energy Partners (NAEP) has won three contracts, including a five-year civil construction and mining contract with Suncor Energy (SU-T, SU-N) and two large-diameter pipeline contracts.

NAEP has signed a five-year contract to supply reclamation, overburden removal and light and heavy civil construction services to Suncor’s oilsands mine operations near Fort McMurray, Alta. The value of the contract is estimated at $500 million, with overburden and mine reclamation work to be priced using a quoted unit-price structure. Civil construction work will be priced on a project-by-project basis.

“The signing of this contract means we can commence the mobilization of heavy equipment to Suncor’s site. Accordingly, we would expect to see work volumes ramp-up over the second quarter,” Rod Ruston, NAEP president and CEO, said in a statement.

NAEP has also inked two new pipeline contracts with a combined initial value of $92.5 million. Under the terms of these contracts, NAEP will build 89 km of 36-inch and 42-inch pipeline in B.C. and Alberta. Construction is expected to start in August 2011, with all segments substantially completed by March 2012.

“Our new pipeline contracts reflect a better ongoing business environment in the pipeline sector,” Ruston said. “We’re seeing more projects coming to market, and the contracts we’re signing include a better balance of risk-sharing between client and supplier.”

SGS to build mega lab in Burnaby

SGS, a Swiss inspection, verification, testing and certification company, is expanding and consolidating its Greater Vancouver operations into a planned 63,000-sq.-ft multi-service laboratory in Burnaby, B.C.

The company anticipates the lab will open in April 2012. All existing SGS facilities in the area will remain operational until the new lab is open.

The multi-service laboratory will house SGS’ Minerals and Agriculture business lines, and form a key part of the SGS global network of laboratories. The company says the latest analytical techniques and equipment will be incorporated into the new facility.

The wide range of services that will be unified include geochemical analysis, orebody modelling and resource estimation, bankable metallurgical testing, fertilizer analysis, high density sludge treatment, environmental sustainability and trade support.

Fluor to work on Quadra FNX’s Sierra Gorda in Chile

Texas-based Fluor Corporation (FLR-N) has won a contract from Quadra FNX Mining (QUX-T) to work at the company’s Sierra Gorda project in Chile.

Fluor’s scope of work on the project will include providing engineering, procurement and construction management services for the mine’s processing plant.

Sierra Gorda is an open-pit, greenfield conventional copper-molybdenum project located in Chile’s Atacama Desert.

When complete, the mine will be capable of processing 110,000 tons per day of ore, expanding to 190,000 tons per day during year four of operations. Quadra FNX is targeting first production from Sierra Gorda in 2014.

“Our team is pleased to work with Quadra FNX on this new project in Chile,” Rick Koumouris, senior vice president and general manager of Fluor’s mining and metals business line, said.
