Survey spurs Ontario exploration

Results from a lake-sediment survey completed by provincial geologists in the Lac des les-Black Sturgeon River are expected to stimulate mineral exploration in northwestern Ontario.

The survey, carried out 100 km north of Thunder Bay, identified 46 areas with significantly higher-than-normal concentrations of precious metals, including platinum, palladium and gold.

Sampling also revealed significant levels of base metals such as copper, nickel and zinc.

The province says many of these prospective sites occur in areas open for staking.

“The Lac des Iles geological structure hosts Canada’s only primary platinum-group-element mine,” says Richard Dyer, a geologist with the Ontario Geological Survey. “The strong presence of these mineral indicators in the region suggests excellent potential for similar mineralization.”

The lake-sediment survey is one of more than two dozen ongoing government field projects investigating Ontario’s geology and mineral potential.
