Plans to construct a copper smelter at Texas City, Tex., with the capacity to process 182,000 tonnes per year have been withdrawn by Mitsubishi Materials.
The company announced in 1989 it would go ahead with the smelter which would supply copper anode to U.S. customers. Texas Copper Corp. was established and a late 1991 startup was forecast. Environmental concerns have reportedly held up the needed government approval.
