The inquiry into the operations and regulation of the Vancouver Stock Exchange (VSE) and British Columbia Securities Commission has taken to the road for public hearings.
The inquiry headed by James Matkin held a hearing in Kelowna in late July and has scheduled another for Sept. 7 in Victoria. Two more will be held in Vancouver on Aug. 10 and Sept. 14.
The commission is urging those involved in the securities industry to participate and offer suggestions. A limited time is available for oral presentations, although written submissions will be accepted until Sept. 15. Mining promoter Murray Pezim spoke at the first hearing on July 20 and recommended that policing responsibilities be taken away from the VSE and given to the Securities Commission, thereby ending the VSE’s self-regulating status. Pezim also recommended that promoters be licensed and more effort be made to ensure public companies spend funds as represented to shareholders.
