When this issue of The Northern Miner becomes cracked and faded, its contents will live on as bits and bytes on the Internet.
The Northern Miner Home Page is up and running on the Internet’s World Wide Web, and while it’s no substitute for the real thing, the page is useful and informative nonetheless. It is also free of charge.
The Internet is a vast network of computers throughout the world that are linked together electronically. The World Wide Web is one service on the Internet which enables users to gain access to information.
To gain access to the Home Page, users must key in the following Internet address code: http://www.southam.com/northernminer/
Once this is done, a title page will appear, referring users to the lead stories in the current issue, as well as all issues dating back to April 17 of this year.
A database of mining companies is included, with addresses, phone numbers and ownership information. Also included is a link to the more comprehensive pay service, Info-Mine, provided by Robertson Info-Data.
Northern Miner Publisher Douglas Donnelly sees the Home Page as a new and different way of attracting new subscribers to the newspaper.
“We don’t provide all the information on the Home Page, but we hope there’s enough there that will motivate users to pick up the phone and call us.” The Home Page provides subscription information, including a check box that will prompt a call from The Northern Miner’s circulation department for anyone who needs additional information or is ready to subscribe.
Donnelly says the page may eventually include advertising and additional features. “We see more potential with it down the road.”
Northern Miner content can also be viewed on Infomart Dialog’s “infomart online” service. For details on that service, call (416) 442-2198.
