Ninety years old and we still have our teeth. As The Northern Miner enters its 91st year as a weekly, Canadian-based mining newspaper, we’re taking time to look back at the momentous news we’ve covered.
Leafing through the enclosed 16-page special section, one thing that stands out, decade after decade, is that a mineral discovery can transform lives and determine the economic development of remote regions.
When Bill James accepted his Canadian Mining Hall of Fame induction a few years, he spoke about mining having a “mystique.” He’s right, of course, though it’s hard to pin down its source: the exotic travel; the challenges presented by nature and technology; the rewards for both individualism and teamwork; the curious mixture of pragmatism and optimism needed to succeed; and of course, Lady Luck.
A special thanks to George Werniuk of Werniuk Information Services, who pored over 90 years of back issues to compile the text, and to the special’s advertisers, who helped make it happen.
