The TSX Composite Index closed the Feb. 19- 25 trading period 3.6% higher, at 13,697.45 points as commodities hit new highs.
The Capped Metals and Mining Index jumped 11.5% over the period, up 84.69 points to822.34 after copper reached a 21-month high, closing the period US12 higher at US$3.72 per lb. Nickel rose US22 to US$12.59 per lb.
Spot gold gained 3.7% to U$938.30 per oz., after reaching a high of US$947.50 on Feb. 21; platinum, meanwhile, kept its upward momentum, rising 1.7% or US$35 per oz. to US$2,144 per oz.
Strong gold prices helped the Global Gold Index rise 6%, or 20 points, to 353.79.
In the markets, Uranium Onewas the most actively traded stock and saw the biggest drop over the period, falling 24%, or $1.59, to $5.05 per share on a volume of more than 76 million shares. The company cut its 2008 production forecast by 32% to 3.15 million lbs. U3O8 and lowered its 2009 forecast by 15% to 6.8 million lbs. U3O8. It was the second time Uranium one revised its forecast downward in four months — the original target for 2008 was 7.4 million lbs. U3O8.
Breakwater Resources was the second most actively traded stock, climbing 13 to $1.43 on 42.4 million shares traded. Eastern Platinum was next, with its shares inching up 3 to $3.43 on a trading volume of 39.4 million.
Copper, zinc and gold producer Inmet Mining was the top gainer for the period, soaring $17.44 to $89.87 per share.
Potash Corp. of Saskatchewan was next in line, advancing $14.10 per share to $163.45. The company announced it would not participate in a March auction for Russian potash mineral reserves because market conditions weren’t right.
After a 217% jump in its share price, Opawica Explorations saw the highest percentage increase over the period. The stock jumped 74 to $1.08 apiece on results from eight holes drilled at Opawica’s Atikwa Lake property, 120 km southeast of Kenora, Ont. Hole AT-08-01 intersected a gold and copper zone. Lake, drilling returned 1 metre grading 0.197% U3O8, 60 cm grading 0.167% U3O8 and 98 cm grading 0.11% U3O8. Three holes drilled to a combined 402 metres at Bruce River returned 30 cm grading 0.237% U3O8.
Gammon Gold shares rose 44% to $8.97 each. At US$505 per oz., the company’s cash costs were 14.3% lower in January than the fourth quarter, and about 34% lower than the third quarter.
