April finished off as the best month since January 2006 for TSX Composite Index, which rose 1.3% over the April 29-May 5 trading period. The benchmark gained 188.49 points over the period, rising to 14,274.34 points.
The Capped Metals and Mining index increased by 17.33 points to close at 859.85 while the Global Gold Index inched 3.01 points ahead to 308.47.
The busiest stocks over the period included Latin American-focused Yamana Gold in the top spot with nearly 39 million shares traded, though boosting the share price 16 to $13.56.
Eastern Platinumshares were up 7 to $2.85 apiece on 37.7 million shares, followed by Lundin Mining, up 14 to $7.39 per share on 30 million shares. Lundin plans to build another circuit within its existing copper plant at the Neves-Corvo mine in Portugal to recover copper and zinc from tailings sludge, costing the company US$17.6 million, and yielding the company an extra 9,500 tonnes of payable copper, 29,000 tonnes of payble zinc and 370,000 oz. of payable silver over the mine life.
First Quantum Minerals was the top dollar-gainer, up $5.73 per share to $92.18, continuing to rise after bidding $281 million in cash and shares for Scandinavian Minerals, which owns the Kevitsa nickel deposit in northern Finland.
Fording Canadian Coal, the secondbiggest exporter of coking coal, saw its shares gain $3.92 to close the period off at $67.51 on a volume of almost 2.8 million shares.
Agnico-Eagle Mines shares were up $3.06 each to $64.87 on 4.5 million shares. Although the gold price has dipped back into the US$800-per-oz. range, and there was a mid-April investor sell-off of gold shares, upcoming first-quarter earnings are expected to be strong.
Energem Resources was the top gainer on a percentage basis, up 44% to 26 each. The company sold a 20% stake in its now 50% indirectly held Nigerian refined fuel storage and distribution facility for US$32.3 million to Glencore Finance.
Actions by the Venezuelan government sent Crystallex International shares tumbling 57% over the period, or 96 to 73 apiece. The company received notice from the Hugo Chavez administration that it wouldn’t be granted a key permit for the Las Cristinas property.
Gold Reserves shares were down 43% to $2.20 each as the company awaits a letter from Venezuelan government explaining the fate of the company’s proposed Brisas gold mine, beside Las Cristinas. The company has spent US$300 million on the project since 1991 and says it could produce 10 million oz. of gold over the project life, plus copper.
Similar uncertainty in Ecuador caused Dynasty Metals & Mining shares to plunge 30% to $2.76 per share. The company is awaiting further clarification before it decides what to do with 350 employees while the government overhauls its mining law.
