Trading Summary (August 23, 2004)

Gold closed up US5 on Aug.23rd, to finish at US$410.60 per oz. in the afternoon in London. The gold index was down 1.46%, or 2.94 points, to close at 198.06. The diversified metals and mining index was down 0.56%, or 1.25 points to close at 220.97 points. The S&P TSX composite index also closed down (20.15 points) at 8,315.47 points.

In a day of relatively light trading, just one mining stock traded over 2 million shares. Five others traded between 1.4-1.86 million shares. There were no news releases to spark trading (apart from the Coeur offer for Wheaton which came late in the day).

Bema Gold led the way in volume, trading 2.34 million shares. The stock fell 3, or 0.87%, to $3.40.

Kinross Gold traded second in volume, 1.86 million shares, and fell 0.9%, or 7, to $7.73.

Cambior fell 3.79%, or 15, to close at $3.81 on a volume of 1.7 million shares.

Southern Cross Resources fell 1.64%, or 2, to $1.20 on a volume of 1.5 million shares.

Wheaton River Minerals fell 2.16%, or 8, to close at $3.62 on a volume of 1.5 million shares. Coeur d’Alene Mines has formally commenced a purchase offer to all Wheaton River shareholders offering the equivalent of $4.29 in cash and Coeur stock per Wheaton share. The bid, offerred until the end of September, represents a premium of 16% over Wheaton River’s current stock price. Coeur is the world’s largest primary silver producer, as well as a significant producer of gold.
