Trading Summary (March 18, 2002)

The Toronto Stock Exchange continued higher on Monday, with the TSE 300 composite index tacking on 46.02 points to close at 7,917.7 points. The golds stole the show vaulting 294.04 points or 5.3% to 5,866.86 as the yellow metal added US$2 to hit US$291.90 per oz. The techs were on the other side falling 1.6% to 3,455.87.

Placer Dome was the busiest gold miner gaining $1.16 to $18.44 on nearly 2.7 million shares. TVX Gold dropped 2 to 96 on about 1.9 million shares. TVX announced late on Friday that a local anti-mining group has filed a petition of suspension in support of its previously announced petition of annulment against the permit allowing for the continuation of mining operations at the company’s Stratoni operation in Greece. The petition calls for an immediate injunction against the operation. The injunction could reach the courts as early as next week. A hear for the petition of suspension hearing would follow sometime around mid-April.

Agnico Eagle, Goldcorp, and Meridian Gold all regained lost ground plus some on Monday. Agnico rose $1.27 to $18.75, Meridian climbed $2.66 to $19.80, and Goldcorp soared $2.65 to $25.

The metals and minerals subgroup managed to edge up 31.29 points to close at 4,781.05. Sherritt International gained 19 or 4% to $4.88 on about 1.25 million shares to lead the pack. Alcan was the next busiest gaining 68 to $64.96 on about half as many shares.

The S&P-CDNX Composite Index started the week off with a 4.47-point gain to close at 1154.92. Spider Resources remained on investors’ view screens dropping 2 pennies to 9 with 893,500 shares on the go. Spider recently announced results from its diamond project in north-central Ontario. Montreal-based Metco Resources was the next explorer in line dropping a penny to 6 on a volume of 732,076 shares. The company is active in Quebec’s Lebel-sur-Quevillon mining camp.
