TSX Venture Exchange – OCTOBER 6-9

Investors spent the Oct. 6-9 reporting period, shortened due to the Thanksgiving holiday in Canada, buying junior stocks and pushing the S&P/TSX Venture composite index up. The board gained every day to close the week up 53.1 points at 1,307.35. Daily trading volumes remained strong, averaging 120.5 million shares.

The market’s rally helped 118 Venturelisted companies reach new 52-week share price highs. Only 17 juniors fell to new lows.

One of those juniors reaching new highs was Anfield Nickel. Led by David Strang and Marshall Koval, two members of Ross Beaty’s inner circle, Anfield is searching out nickel laterite deposits in Guatemala. Since Beaty’s Lumina Capital picked up 10 million Anfield share in a private placement in April, bringing its outstanding count to 25 million, the company’s shares have jumped from 40¢ to close the pre-Thanksgiving week at $3.55.

A takeover bid, which supposedly started friendly but quickly turned hostile, continued to lift Freewest Resources Canada shares: over the week, the stock gained 12¢ to close at 50¢. Noront Resources is offering one share for every four Freewest shares; at the time it was made, the offer implied a price of almost 40¢ per share and valued Freewest at $90 million. The merger would consolidate the companies’ efforts in Ontario’s Ring of Fire, an area near McFauld’s Lake in the James Bay lowlands that has recently been found to host considerable chromite and nickel-copper-platinum group metal resources. Noront shares also benefitted from the merger news, gaining 45¢ to $2.

Working on the adage that the best place to look for gold is beside an old mine, International Wayside Gold Mines consolidated a 1,000-sq.-km land package in the historic Cariboo goldfields that includes at least seven old mines. Now drills are returning good gold intercepts from the aptly named Bonanza Ledge zone at Barkerville Mountain, such as 84.4 metres grading 16.5 grams gold per tonne, 24.4 metres of 5.39 grams gold, and 51.5 metres of 7.17 grams gold — and International Wayside’s share price is rising in turn. Over the week it gained 62¢ to close at $1.46.

San Gold’s move to purchase a set of gold properties in the Timmins mining camp lifted its shares 38¢ over the week to close at $3.16. For $1 million and 1 million shares, San Gold is acquiring a 31.5% interest in the Davidson-Tisdale gold deposit, which hosts a historic resource (not compliant with National Instrument 43-101) of 747,600 tonnes grading 12.39 grams gold, as well as complete ownership of the nearby North Tisdale property.

The week’s two top-gaining stocks both seem to have benefited from investors betting on good news to come. International Tower Hill Mines rose $1.20 over the week to close at $5.64; the next day it announced a new resource estimate for its flagship Livengood gold project lifting the gold resource count to 8.1 million indicated oz. plus 4.4 million inferred oz. And Exeter Resource added 93¢ to its share price over the week to reach $5.60 before releasing strong results from its Cerro Moro project in Argentina.
