TSX Venture Exchange – Sept. 1 – 4

The S&P/TSX Venture composite index showed renewed strength over the Sept. 1-4 trading week, a session shortened by the Labour Day holiday. The board posted considerable gains on three of four days to close the week up 54.01 points at 1,229.25. Daily trading volumes were strong, averaging 98.4 million.

Bull performances more than doubled bearish progress: over the week, 62 Venture-listed companies climbed to new 52-week share price highs while only 28 fell to new lows.

The week’s top trader was San Gold, which moved almost 14 million shares to close up 11¢ at $3.17. Investors are loving San Gold’s high-grade Rice Lake gold project in Ontario, which in recent weeks has returned such intercepts as 44 grams gold per tonne over 5.9 metres and 60.3 grams gold over 2 metres, and have pushed San Gold’s share price up $2 or 167% since the beginning of the year.

Another company doing well on gold intercepts was Romarco Minerals, which reported assay results from its Haile gold project in South Carolina. Recent results, including 4 grams gold over 32 metres, expanded the Snake pit mineralization in two directions. Romarco gained 6¢ over the week to close at $1.11.

The biggest absolute gain of the week went to International Tower Hill Mines. In late August the company reported yet another set of solid drill results from its Livengood gold project in Alaska, including 6.3 grams gold over 21 metres, that expanded the project’s potential for higher grades. And in early September Tower Hill kicked off an initial drill program at Coffee Dome, another Alaskan project, which is 17 km away from Fort Knox and hosts quartz-gold-arsenopyrite veins in metamorphic rock.

Long, gold-bearing intercepts at the Cerro Moro project in Argentina lifted Exeter Resource’s share price 65¢ over the week to $4.05. A July estimate pegged Cerro Moro’s current resource at 1.1 million inferred tonnes grading 10.5 grams gold and 545 grams silver per tonne; recent results, such as 101.1 grams gold and 2,507 grams silver over 4.6 metres, look set to boost those numbers.

Buoyed by China’s decision to limit or halt exportation of many rare earth elements, juniors exploring for those elements have seen a surge of interest. One of those benefitting from the surge is Rare Element Resources, which recently started a 5,000-metre resource expansion drilling program at its Bear Lodge project in Wyoming. The company gained 45¢ over the week to reach $3.70; in April it was trading at 60¢.

And two small Vancouver juniors saw their share prices jump on news from their joint-ventured Red Cliff gold property in northwestern B. C. The first two holes of the season returned 7.53 grams gold over 32.5 metres and 4.17 grams gold over 48.5 metres; project-operator Decade Resources gained 30¢ to reach 43¢ while co-owner Mountain Boy Minerals rose 5.5¢ to 10.5¢.
