U. S. stock indexes were mixed during the May 6-12 trading session. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 93 points, or 0.7%, to 12,876. The Standard and Poor’s 500 Index declined 4 points, or 0.2%, to 1,404. However, the techheavy NASDAQ gained 24 points, or 1%, to end the week at 2,488. On the back of an advancing gold price, precious metal indexes also rose. The Philadelphia Gold and Silver Index climbed 4.5 points, or 2.5%, to 179, and the Amex Gold Bugs Index gained 11.5 points, or 2.8%, to 420.
Coal-related equities registered healthy gains on robust trading volumes: Peabody Energy added US$5.05 to US$68.80 with 21 million shares changing hands; Alpha Natural Resources gained US$3.36 to US$59.70 on 19 million shares traded; Consol Energy, which also supplies coal-based methane, climbed US$3.14 to US$91.76 on 13 million shares of volume; Arch Coal added US55 to US$62.47 on 23 million shares traded; Fording Canadian Coal Trust rose US$2.58 to US$69.59 on 8 million shares; and Foundation Coal advanced US35 to US$62.10 on 6 million shares of volume. International Coal, meanwhile, moved up US86 to US$9.44 on 14 million shares traded, and Cleveland-Cliffs, a supplier of metallurgical coal and iron ore, climbed US$13.33 to US$180.55 on 11 million shares of volume.
Cameco, the world’s largest uranium miner, gained US$4.43 to US$40.01 on 16 million shares traded. Aluminum company Alcoa moved up US$4.72 to US$41.61 on 93 million shares. Potash Corp. of Saskatchewan rose US$6.80 to US$200.69 on 52 million shares. Copper miner Freeport McMoRan Copper & Gold dropped US$1.33 to US$114.66 on 42 million shares. Barrick Gold, the world’s largest miner of the precious metal, declined US11 to US$38.80 on 51 million shares, while fellow gold miner Newmont Mining fell US9 to US$45.26 on 27 million shares. Goldcorp added US$2.76 to end the session at US$39.44 on 38 million shares. The world’s largest miner, BHP Billiton, advanced US$3.34 to US$88.27 on 24 million shares. Crystallex International recovered some-what from its steep fall in the previous trading session, gaining US20 to US92 on 26 million shares.
Notable penny-stock movers included NT Holdings, jumping morethan 400% to US46 on 1.9 million shares. Douglas Lake Mineralsgained 200% to US51 on 3.3 million shares.
