Union campaigns for Elliot Lake

The political action committee of locals 5417 and 5980 of the United Steelworkers of America, representing workers at Rio Algom’s Stanleigh uranium mine at Elliot Lake, Ont., has started up its “Ontario fuel for Ontario Hydro” campaign.

Stanleigh is scheduled to close in 1996 and the committee plans to lobby Ontario Hydro to exercise its policy of continuing to buy fuel from the mine, beyond the closing date.

Rio Algom is the only surviving producer of uranium in the famous mining camp. Competitor Denison Mines closed its Elliot Lake mining operations in 1992.
