Union member charged at Giant

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police have charged Roger Wallace Warren with nine counts of first-degree murder in connection with an explosion in the Giant gold mine that killed nine miners more than a year ago.

Warren, 49, is a resident of Yellowknife, N.W.T., where the underground operation is situated. He is also a member of the Canadian Smelter and Allied Workers Local 4, which went on strike May 23, 1992, after rejecting a tentative agreement with mine owner Royal Oak Mines (TSE).

The strike was marked by numerous outbreaks of violence and culminated in the fatal blast on Sept. 18, 1992. At least two other bombs were set off during the strike. As many as nine suspects are reported to have been investigated in relation to these bombings. More arrests are expected.
