Venezuelan delegation reviews Novagold’s mining technology

A delegation of Venezuelan mining personnel are in Halifax to review indoor vat leaching technology developed by Novagold Resources (TSE) for the recovery of gold.

The 6-person delegation includes environmental officials, the president of the Venezuelan Gold Association, the president of the Venezuelan Chamber of Mines and the Venezuelan government’s mining representative. Traditionally, fine gold is extracted by means of agitated leaching or heap leaching, employing cyanide in solution. In both cases, there is a risk that cyanide can seep into groundwater or harm wildlife.

The Novagold process is much safer as regards the natural environment because the leaching occurs in indoor vats, in a closed circuit with no effluent. After gold has been stripped from the leaching solution, the cyanide is reused on the next batch of ore.
