Mining industry pioneer Ross Beaty joined mining icons like Peter Munk and Robert Friedland after receiving The Northern Miner’s lifetime achievement award.
He is celebrated for founding 15 companies, including Pan American Silver (TSX: PAAS; NYSE: PAAS) and Equinox Gold (TSX: EQX; NYSE-AM: EQX). Equinox’s Greenstone mine began commercial production in Canada earlier this year. Beaty’s ventures have created billions in shareholder value, the International Metals Symposium heard in London on Dec. 2.
“Mining is a business of perpetual risk management,” he said in a fireside chat with TNM Group president Anthony Vaccaro. “You have to understand the political, environmental and operational challenges and adapt quickly—or you won’t survive.”
Beaty highlighted lessons learned from managing projects in Russia and West Africa. They faced political risks in Russia and operational challenges in West Africa.
Beaty is known for his environmental stewardship. He chairs the BC Parks Foundation, which reflects his commitment to sustainability.
