The historic devolution of land and mineral rights control from federal to Nunavut marks a new era of self-determination for the territory, says Tom Hoefer, executive director of the Northwest Territories and Nunavut Chamber of Mines.
“The landlord has changed,” Hoefer told The Northern Miner’s western editor, Henry Lazenby, during the recent AME BC Roundup convention in Vancouver.
“It’s the people that now have mining in their backyard that will be making the decisions. I think that’s better for industry because they’re not far removed.”
The change, outlined in an agreement signed earlier this year, will have profound implications for the territory’s governance and mining industry, boosting both public and private sectors.
Hoefer highlighted the vast potential of Nunavut’s mineral wealth, including gold, iron, and critical minerals, and underlined the importance of sustainable practices and community engagement in shaping the future of mining in Canada’s North.
