A renewed focus on sustainable industry is driving innovation to achieve it, a panel heard early this month in London.
Dundee Sustainable Technologies (CSE: DST) vice president Brent Johnson spoke at The Northern Miner’s International Metals Symposium on Dec. 1 in London. He said his company’s cyanide-free CLEVR gold extraction process is a safer alternative to cyanide processing.
“If cyanide were banned overnight, 80% to 90% of mines would face immediate disruption,” he said, highlighting CLEVR’s potential to cut liabilities by eliminating massive tailings dams.
Thomas Mumford, vice-president of exploration at Scottie Resources (TSXV: SCOT), cited electrification and automation as key to efficiency and sustainability, despite high costs and slow adoption.
Aris Mining (TSX: ARIS; NYSE-A: ARMN) senior vice president, Giovanna Romero, explained that integrating artisanal miners at Segovia, Colombia, has made them legal, productive partners. They now contribute 44% of gold production. She also showed new mine closure strategies. They included turning tailings sites into parks and solar plants.
