As part of a $6-million 1998 exploration campaign, at Virginia Gold Mines (VIA-M) has initiated summer field work at myriad prospects throughout the province of Quebec.
In the James Bay region, crews have started work on the La Grande Sud, La Grande Nord, Guyer Belt, Corvet Ouest and Duncan properties. Early-stage work is also planned at the Auclair, Lac Caron, Opinaca, LG-3, Lac Fagnant and Corvet Est projects.
At La Grande Sud, zones 32, 103, 35, as well as the Pari, Mico-Milan and Ugo zones, will be tested by stripping and drilling in the coming months. La Grande Nord will be the object of geophysical surveying and prospecting, to be followed by drilling to be supervised by Noranda (NOR-T). At Auclair, structural mapping will be followed by a drilling program designed to test targets spread over 15 km of iron formation.
Following the acquisition of 22 new properties in northern Quebec, a syndicate co-owned by Virginia, Cambior (CBJ-T) and Quebec government-owned Soquem will carry out airborne geophysical surveys and ground work.
Also in the far north of the province, Virginia has planned prospecting and drilling on the Kogaluk, Payne, Mezard, Duquet, Naarsaluuk, Farineau, Lac Gayot, Lac Suit and Lac Aubert properties.
At the Sagar gold-uranium project north of Schefferville, Virginia’s partners, Inmet (IMN-T) and Denison Mines (DEN-T), are beginning an exploration program that will include drilling.
In the North Shore and Lac St.-Jean regions, Virginia will complete prospecting and drilling work on the Lac Volant and Chute-des-Passes projects.
While Virginia has more than 50 projects on the go in Quebec, the company says priority is being given to La Grande Sud, La Grand Nord, Auclair, Opinaca, Corvet Ouest and Chute-des-Passes projects.
The junior has $14.5 million in cash and is debt free.
