Atlas Copco Canada of Montreal has brought its aut omated drilling jumbo to the Canadian market. Called the Robot Boomer H135, the rig features two but 35 booms for drilling mine openings which have cross sectional areas up to 90 sq m. The company says its automated features enable the machine to drill straighter holes to yield such cost- saving advantages as reduced consumption of explosives, less overbreak and fewer drill holes per round.
The rig is equipped with cop 1440 hydraulic rock drills which will drill double the speed of conventional rock drills, the company says. Drilling in Scandanavian granite, rates of 3.6 m per minute were achieved. The new drills are charged by a 2×75-kW electro-hydraulic power pack.
Long payback periods because of the equipment’s high cost have meant delayed penetration into the Canadian mining market so far, according to a spokesman for the company.
