WHAT’S NEW Underground equipment Oscilloader evolution

Continuous Mining Systems (Sudbury, Ont.) has replaced the steel chain conveyor table on its CL-1000 Oscilloader with a single-ply kevlar conveyor belt. John Kelly, manager of mine research for Inco Ltd, spoke at the annual meeting of the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy in Toronto last month. He said the company’s operating experience with the revolutionary new mucking machine has demonstrated unsatisfactory chain life and premature wear on several components.

When the company’s six operating machines need re-building, the chain feeders will be replaced with kevlar belts.

“We’ve had a tough time trying to destroy the kevlar conveyor,” Kelly said. “I told a couple of guys to try to wreck it, but they managed only to take one small chunk out of it.”

To deal with oversize muck, Continuous Mining is considering the possibility of mounting a hydraulic rock- breaker and boom on the side of the oscilloader.

Oversize chunks are currently pushed aside for secondary blasting.
