A Newmont Mining (NMC-T, NEM-N) worker was killed recently when the floor collapsed under the loader he was operating at the 5,600-ft. level of the Midas gold mine in Nevada.
Rescue teams from Newmont’s Midas, Twin Creeks and Carlin mines were sent to the scene. The body of Dan Shaw, 30, an underground miner, was later recovered.
The area where the accident occurred was unstable, making work there slow and difficult. Care was taken to ensure the safety of the search and recovery workers, which included personnel from Barrick Gold (ABX-T, ABX-N), the U.S. Navy, Lang Drilling, Substrata Camera Service, and Nevada Air National Guard.
“The entire Newmont family grieves the loss of our colleague and friend, Dan Shaw,” said Newmont chairman Wayne Murdy in a release.
State and federal safety regulators are investigating the accident and will publish a report on their findings.
Shaw is survived by his wife Mara, and daughters Michaela and Tatum.
