As 2004 unfolds, there is renewed optimism throughout the international mining community. This new era will once again test our abilities in an all too familiar arena. Governments around the world will continue to be challenged to find ways to promote economic growth, social health and environmental balance. Once again the mining industry promises to play an important role in these building blocks in all corners of the globe.
The 2004 World Mines Ministries Forum (WMMF), being held in Toronto on March 4-7, will provide context for governments and senior mining executives to discuss issues that will usher our industry into this new era of mineral development. This will be the 3rd Forum and based on its previous successes and strong association with the Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada’s (PDAC) Annual Convention in the same location on March 7-10, this WMMF promises to be a key event for 2004.
New to this year’s format is a Ministers Forum which will host key Mines Ministers from prominent mining jurisdictions around the world. They will share their views on the topics featured in the official program and then take part in a Town Hall Panel that will allow conference delegates to engage in an interactive discussion with all of the Ministers. The main program will include key sessions on Role of Geological Surveys; Legacy Issues; Security of Tenure; Mining: Who Benefits?; and Mining Education for Indigenous People. These sessions will be highly interactive and will conclude with a joint WMMF/PDAC session held as part of the official PDAC program on Sunday, March 7. This session will summarize the WMMF discussions and will be open to both WMMF and PDAC delegates.
