WSGS identifies kimberlite

Mapping by the Wyoming State Geological Survey (WSGS) has defined more kimberlite occurrences in the Iron Mountain district, 35 miles northwest of Cheyenne.

The kimberlite field has been tested for more than two years by the WSGS. Work during this past summer identified several occurrences of kimberlite, dyke complexes and kimberlite pipes. Geophysical surveys are planned for several unidentified anomalies, and mapping continues.

Another kimberlite field appears 50 miles southwest of the Iron Mountain region, near the Colorado border. About 130,000 carats were mined in that area following a WSGS program in the late 1970s.
