Partners Southern Africa Minerals (SAF-T) and Noranda (NOR-T) have outlined a core of high-grade zinc mineralization in the Caber deposit, 25 km west of the Matagami mining camp in northern Quebec.
Twelve holes intersected between 8% and 21% zinc over core widths varying from 2 to 14 metres. Most intervals also contained significant quantities of copper and silver, and minor traces of gold.
Using a cutoff grade of 9% zinc and a minimum width of 4.5 metres, Noranda estimated the core’s resource at 412,600 tonnes grading 12.3% zinc and 1% copper, plus 15 grams silver per tonne. This resource is contained in a larger deposit of 1.3 million tonnes grading 5.5% zinc, 1.3% copper, 10.2 grams silver and 0.26 gram gold.
A prefeasibility study is determining the viability of gaining access to the deposit by ramp and will also consider metallurgical testing and deep drilling. As well, a gravel road to the Caber North target, situated 2 km to the north, is being developed.
Previous drilling at Caber North intersected four separate massive sulphide lenses in a broader envelope of massive magnetite-pyrite-pyrrhotite mineralization. Some of the better results include: 6.6 metres of 3.3% copper in zone A; 9.3 metres of 7.9% zinc in zone B; and 6.3 metres of 4.3% copper in zone C.
Upon completion of the road, three exploration drill rigs will be transported to the area.
Exploration at the Caber property is jointly managed by Southern Africa and a unit of Noranda. The latter company can earn a 70% interest by spending $6 million on exploration and development, completing a private placement of $2.8 million in Southern Africa and advancing the property to production.
