Toronto Stock Exchange Feb. 27-Mar. 5

In a week that included an 8.8% sell-off within China’s Shanghai Composite Index, there was little to be gained in the markets during the Feb. 27-March 5 trading period. The TSX Composite Index felt the effects, falling more than 5% or 693.21 points to 12,711.25.

The Global Gold Index dipped 10.7% or 36.20 points to 301.76 while gold held a little stronger, dropping about 7% to US$636.75 per oz. from US$685.75 per oz. a week earlier. The Capped Metals and Mining Index slumped 11.7% or about 80 points to 603.21.

Yamana Gold was the most active stock over the week with more than 43 million shares traded, dropping $2.54 to $15.52. In second place, shares of Breakwater Resources lost 28 to close at $1.81 on trading volume of more than 38 million shares. Breakwater expects to produce about 54,000 tonnes of zinc per year over at least seven years from its Langlois mine near Val d’Or, Que. Third on the list, Paladin Resources dropped 24.9% or $2.30 to close the week at $6.92 on volume of 37 million shares. Paladin announced a A$1 billion takeover bid for Summit Resources, which holds a 50% interest in Paladin’s Vahalla-Skal uranium project in eastern Queensland, Australia. A moratorium on uranium mining in the Australian state means production isn’t expected until at least 2012.

Kinross Gold warrants lost the most value by percentage with a loss of 25.2%, ending the week at 86. The company’s shares closed the week $2.25 lower at $14.74 on trading volume of 26 million shares. Kinross completed its acquisition of Bema Gold on Feb. 27.

Khan Resources was third on the list, falling 24.5% to $3.53. Khan closed an offering of 8.15 million shares on March 1, bringing the company $30.16 million to further its Dornod uranium project in Mongolia.

There were few gains to be had during a week marred by the Shanghai crash, but Western Quebec Mines, which owns 33% of Wesdome Gold Mines, was one of few companies that came out ahead. Western Quebec gained 10%, or 25, on trading volume of just 15,800, closing at $2.75. Wesdome was shy of meeting its 2006 production targets, but recently announced a surprise gold zone discovery at its Kiena mine in Val d’Or.

Northern Orion Resources warrants increased 5.8%, or 18, to $3.27, while the company’s share price was up 8 to $4.31. The company recently updated its feasibility study for its Agua Rica copper-gold-molybdenum project in Argentina. Production is set for 2010 at a rate of 90,000 tonnes per day with a mine life of 23 years. Measured and indicated resources, at cutoff grades of 0.2% and 0.4%, respectively, stand at 1.1 billion tonnes grading 0.47% copper and 586 million tonnes grading 0.63% copper.

Intrepid Minerals gained 5.6%, closing at 56 a share. A positive feasibility study for the company’s Casposo gold-silver project in Argentina was released on March 5.
