The TSX Composite Index couldn’t maintain the all-time high it set last period, falling 126.1 points to 13,166.69 over the Feb. 6-12 trading period.
Losses in the energy and materials sectors fuelled a drop that could have been worse were it not for significant gains in the technology sector and M&A activity that included a takeover of Novelis and the Four Seasons Hotels going private.
Energy shares fell as oil prices came down on news that Saudi Arabia had told Asian refiners to expect more shipments next month.
Campbell Resources was again the most actively traded stock, again, on no news. The Montreal-based junior has gold and copper projects in Quebec and finished the period as it began — at 17 on roughly 53 million shares traded.
Diamond Fields International had the distinction of being the period’s second-most-popular stock, but of more importance for those long on the stock, its shares made an 85% gain to close out the trading session at 18. On Feb. 7, the company announced better than expected results from its offshore diamond mine in Namibia. A total of 1,448 diamonds weighing 705 carats at an average stone size of 0.49 carat per stone were recovered in the first nine days of operations.
Staying with diamonds, Stornoway Diamond also had good news, if from the other side of the world. The company recently announced that its Churchill project in Nunavut had yielded 585 diamonds greater than 0.85 mm, or 16.42 carats from a total of 17.26 tonnes recovered from four kimberlite dykes. At presstime, Stornoway shares were off 1 at $1.16 on nearly 300,000 shares traded.
On the day that Nuinsco Resources’ nickel spinoff, Victory Nickel began trading, Nuinsco shares lost roughly 65% of their value, falling to 51 for the period after heavy trading. Nuinsco retains copper, zinc, uranium, gold and some nickel projects in Canada and Turkey. Victory shares fell out of the gate, falling from an opening day price of $1.21 to close at 72 just five days later, on Feb. 12.
A new uranium deal in Utah helped boost Goldstake Explorations’ shares. The company’s stock was up 50% to 21 after announcing that it had acquired a 50% interest in 200 mineral claims in the Four Corners area of the state. The company is paying US$300,000 for the interest and will fund the initial US$200,000 in development costs, should a mine be put into production.
Kimber Resources’ shares were knocked down 25% to $1.82 after the company announced that two areas at its Coratore deposit were proven to be uneconomic. The company, with gold and silver projects in northern Mexico, also announced that varying results from metallurgical studies at its Carmen project have it considering alternative mining operations and processing methods.
