The Toronto Stock Exchange yo-yo’d itself 132.34 points higher to end the March 28-April 3 report period at a record high close of 12,210.86. The golds advanced 5.4% to 303.67 as the yellow metal leapt US$22 to US$587 per oz., a level not seen for around a quarter century. The base metal miners chipped in with a 2% rise to 469.06 points on mostly higher metal prices.
A $10-million investment by neighbour Newmont Mining sent shares in Queenstake Resources 10.5 or 30% higher to 45 on a whopping 59 million shares. The deal will give Newmont a 4.9% stake in Queenstake, which it can boost to 8.5% upon exercising the associated warrants. Queenstake slightly trimmed its losses to US$19.7 million during 2005. Newmont added 96 to make $59.97.
TVI Pacific put in a rare appearance on the TSX’s most-traded miners list, with more than 15.6 million shares advancing 1.5 to 17. TVI narrowed its loss by around 28% to just shy of $3.1 million during 2005; revenues more than quadrupled to $17.7 million as the Canatuan gold-silver mine in the Philippines began commercial production in early 2005.
Nevsun Resources got a late shot in the arm to finish 52 or 18% better at $3.45. The company recently poured its first gold from the Tabakoto gold mine in Mali. At full steam, Tabakoto is expected to produce 100,000 oz. per year at US$300 apiece.
Shares in Silvercorp Metals ended $2.70 or 16% higher at $19.80 after the company announced it has been granted an underground mining permit for the Ying silver project in China’s Henan province. The permit allows for a 600-tonne-per-day silver, lead and zinc mine.
Still better percentage gains were seen by Euro Ressources, up 50% to $1.35; Thundermin Resources, plus 45% to 16; High Plains Uranium, 37% higher at $1.11; and Franc-Or Resources, which gained 31% to 31.5.
Euro lost $1.48 million during 2005, down from $2.24 million in 2004, as revenues jumped to $4.9 million from $97,000 thanks to royalty payments from Cambior’s Rosebel mine in Suriname. High Plains recently named Thomas Parker as its new chief executive officer. Franc-Or is kicking the tires at several precious and base metal exploration properties in Peru, and continues to peddle its Humboldt Springs gold property in Nevada.
Also on the rise was Endeavour Mining, plus $1.81, or 28%, to $8.26. The company plans to buy back up to 10% of its shares over the next year. Endeavour also recently posted net income of US$31.9 million during the three months ended Feb. 28, up from US$3.4 million during the corresponding period a year earlier. The dramatic increase is mostly owing to a mark-to-market gain of US$36.1 million on several of its merchant banking equity positions.
