Toronto Stock Exchange Trading April 24-30

The TSX Composite Index fell 212.29 points to 13,416.68 over the April 24-30 trading period after economic reports pointed to slowing growth in the U.S. market, causing a slump in commodity related shares.

Energy producers saw their shares fall after federal Environment Minister John Baird announced a plan to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 20% by 2020. The news fuelled speculation that Alberta’s oil sands projects will have to be scaled back.

The price of gold fell US$11.70 to US$677.00 per oz. over the session, and was continuing to fall at presstime, as oil prices weakened and Asian and European markets closed for the “Golden Week” and May Day holidays. The loss was reflected in the Global Gold Index, which fell 15.17 points to 291.78.

The Metals & Mining Index also came down after a prolonged bull run. The diversified miners were down 11.78 points to 720.02 for the period as copper, nickel and tin all pulled back from their recent big gains. Aluminum, zinc and lead were up marginally for the period.

Stornoway Diamond drew attention to the Canadian diamond scene by unloading its 45% stake in the Buffalo Hills project in northern Alberta. The company acquired the project earlier this year when it took over Ashton Mining of Canada.

Venture-listed Diamondex Resources and Shore Gold announced they will buy the stake; Diamondex will contribute $6.25 million in cash plus $2.5 million in shares, and Shore will put in $8.75 million in cash.

Ashton and partners EnCana and Pure Diamonds Exploration have so far spent $30 million on exploration at Buffalo Hills.

Stornoway shares fell 6 for the period to 96, while Diamondex fell 6 to 40 and Shore Gold fell 38 to $5.51.

Canadian Royalties found good news in the courtrooms of Quebec, as a claim filed by Ungava Minerals against two of its directors — Bruce Durham and Glenn Mullan — was dismissed.

Ungava had been seeking $50 million in damages after alleging trespass and concealment at the Expo-Ungava property in northern Quebec. Still, the good news couldn’t offset the impact of lower nickel prices, as Canadian Royalties lost 3 for the period, coming down to $3.92.

Dynatec was the period’s most popular miner, trading almost 32 million shares and falling 10 to $4.37. The heavy trading came the week following Sherritt International’s agreement to buy Dynatec and its 40% stake in the Ambatovy nickel project, in Madagascar, for $1.6 billion.

The period’s biggest gainer was Inspiration Mining. The Vancouver-based company gained 43% to finish at $6.01 after announcing results from its Langmuir project near Timmins, Ont. Results were highlighted by an interval of 1.054% nickel over 13.36 metres.
