TSX Venture Exchange April 17-23

With bullion prices rising to an almost one-year high and base metals soaring, the S&P-TSX Venture Composite Index turned in a modest 2.1 point gain to close the April 17-23 trading session at a multi-year high of 3,351.83. Average daily trading volumes on the junior board remained robust over the week at 96.5 million shares.

The bullish trend continued during the session with 84 explorers seeing new yearly highs versus just 19 that dipped to 52-week lows.

UrAsia Energy saw 28.9 million shares change hands over the week, but slipped 40 per share to close at $7.59 on its last trading day before merging with TSX-listed SXR Uranium One.

Strong market speculation kept GGL Diamond a strong trader with 16.9 million shares changing hands; the stock rallied 31.5% and closed up 17.5 at 73 per share. Investor interest was ignited following a recent announcement that the junior had tied up a large prospective nickel belt in the Northwest Territories in the midst of its diamond hunt.

Plans to acquire a molybdenum project in China sent shares of E-Energy Ventures soaring over 100%, closing the week up 34 at 66 on trading volume of 13.6 million. The purchase agreement calls for a payment of US$21 million for 70% of the Nanyang moly project in Henan province.

Cypress Development traded over 11.1 million shares on the session, shedding a nickel to close at 61. The Red Lake, Ont.-area gold explorer announced financing plans that would see a $2.6-million investment from Goldcorp. Its joint-venture partner and sister company Skyharbour Resources saw 9.9 million shares change hands to close down 2 at 22.5.

Afri-Can Marine Minerals posted a gain of almost 30%, closing up 6.5 at 28.5 per share on trading volume of more than 10.1 million shares. The company had no news, but is exploring its offshore marine diamond concessions on the Namibian coast.

Shares of Commerce Resources continued to rise on the week, closing up 24 at $1.39 apiece on trading volume of 9.7 million. Environmental approval for the company’s Upper Fir tantalum-niobium project, in eastern B.C., was recently announced along with plans to proceed with a prefeasibility study later this year.

Consolidated Global Diamond closed the week up 12.5 at 26 per share to post a 93% gain on trading volume of almost 9.6 million on no news. It is exploring its Lac de Gras-area diamond projects in the Northwest Territories.

Junior nickel darling Crowflight Minerals closed up 13 at $1.13 per share on volume of almost 9.5 million shares. A recently closed $25-million financing is earmarked for exploration and development of its Bucko Lake nickel deposit in northern Manitoba.

On trading volume of 5.5 million shares, Medoro Resources posted a 105% gain, closing up 63 at $1.23 per share. It recently entered into an agreement to option nine gold projects in Mali, West Africa.
