Buoyed by a mid-summer rally in precious and base metal prices, the junior mining-dominated S&P-TSX Venture Composite Index rebounded from recent losses to post a week of solid gains, closing the July 25-31 trading session up 113.16 points, or 4.5%, at 2,613.77. Daily volumes averaged 40.9 million shares.
Just 24 junior miners managed to rally to new yearly highs over the week, while 38 companies slipped to 52-week lows.
Plexmar Resources regained its volume-leader status with over 8.9 million shares traded, gaining 6 to close the week at 47 per share. Sampling continues at its Bolsa del Diablo project in Peru, where a number of high-grade gold values have been returned.
Quebec-focused junior Strateco Resources placed second amongst most actives, gaining 42.5%, or 34, to close at $1.14 on volume of 4.2 million shares. Drilling at its Otish Mountain-area Matoush uranium project continues to intersect mineralization, with assay results pending.
Shares of junior nickel producer Brilliant Mining rose 27.5%, or 22, to close at $1.02 on trading volume of 4.2 million. Strong nickel prices, based on dwindling inventories, stirred market interest in the company, which recently acquired a 25% interest in the Lanfranchi nickel mine in Western Australia.
With spot uranium prices touching an all-time high of US$47.25 per lb. of U3O8, UrAsia Energy posted a 17.3% gain on volume of over 3.8 million shares, closing at $2.99 per share. This year’s production from the company’s Akdala uranium mine in Kazakhstan is expected at 2.6 million lbs. U3O8, and will help supply recently secured contracts.
Following the recent discovery of potentially diamondiferous ultramafic breccias at its Sahtu project in the Northwest Territories, Patrician Diamonds gained 59% to close up a dime at 27 per share on volume of 3.4 million.
Shares of prospective molybdenum miner Roca Mines traded up 11, or 14%, to close the week at 89 apiece on volume of over 3.2 million. The company has signed an off-take agreement for planned molybdenum concentrate production from its Max mine in southeastern B.C.
Junior uranium explorer Bayswater Ventures gained 12 per share over the week, to close at $1.34 on volume of almost 3 million, following acquisition of significant landholdings in northern Saskatchewan’s Athabasca basin. The company is also in the process of merging with Pathfinder Resources.
Tyler Resources rallied almost 67% to close at 60 per share on volume of 1.5 million. The company announced that drilling at its polymetallic Bahuerachi project in Chihuahua state, Mexico, returned wide mineralized intercepts.
Top value gainer was again Aurelian Resources, trading up $1.45 to close the week at $22.80 on volume of almost 1.5 million shares. The company is adding two additional diamond drill rigs to further test its Fruta del Norte epithermal gold-silver project in southeastern Ecuador, where it has returned a number of spectacular intervals.
