TSX Venture Exchange July 4-10

With metal prices showing signs of holding their ground, the S&P-TSX Venture Composite Index managed a modest gain of 8.84 points over the post-holiday July 4-10 trading session, closing at 2,644.04. Average daily trading volumes also edged slightly higher to 41.2 million shares.

Bulls gained some momentum on the week with 31 junior miners rallying to new yearly highs, while 20 companies sank to 52-week lows.

Plexmar Resources easily retained volume leader status, trading over 33.4 million shares, and touching a new high of 55 before closing the week at 41 per share. Channel sampling at its Bolsa del Diablo project, in Peru, returned bonanza-grade gold in a new vein system.

Beleaguered Yukon Zinc traded almost 9.1 million shares and gained over 38%, or 9, to bounce off recent lows and close the session at 32.5 per share. The company is seeing a modest recovery from investor fallout after a feasibility study on its Wolverine zinc-copper-lead deposit indicated elevated costs and a high precious metals royalty structure.

Shares of Cash Minerals continued to rally, trading up 41%, or 32, to close the week at $1.10 on volume of 6 million shares. The company has started drilling on its Lumina and Igor uranium projects in the Wernecke Mountain area of the Yukon.

Goldmarca traded over 5.1 million shares and notched up two pennies to close the week at 69. Investors remain bullish on recent high-grade gold intercepts from its Condor gold project in southeastern Ecuador. The company also recharged its treasury, recently closing a $10.35-million financing.

Diamond explorer Indicator Minerals saw gains of 10% over the session, closing at 77 on volume of over 4.1 million shares. The company announced the discovery of five kimberlites in initial drilling at its Darby project in Nunavut.

Cantex Mine Development gained three pennies to close at 11 per share on volume of almost 2.7 million following drill results from its Al Hariqah gold project in Yemen. The program returned up to 6 metres grading 11.2 grams gold per tonne.

Shares of Carpathian Gold rose almost 10%, or 6, to settle the week at 68 apiece on trading volume of over 2.5 million. Initial drilling at the company’s Rovina porphyry project in central Romania returned wide mineralized intercepts of up to 546 metres averaging 0.6 gram gold and 0.3% copper.

MBMI Resources gained 50% on the week to close at 87 per share on volume of over 500,000. The company controls several nickel projects in the Philippines and holds the MacMillan gold mine project, in northern Ontario, which is under option to Young-Shannon Gold Mines.

Top value gainer was Aurelian Resources, which traded up 80 on over 1.2 million shares to close the week at $19.10. An additional drill hole at the company’s Condor project in southeastern Ecuador returned a 195.7-metre intercept grading 6 grams gold and 20 grams silver.
