The July 8-14 trading session was not particularly kind to the S&P-TSX Venture Composite Index — the board lost 100.03 points over the week to close at 2,378.34. The summer trading doldrums were still apparent in lagging daily trading volumes, which averaged out at 66.3 million.
The bears certainly dominated the venture market. A whopping 291 juniors saw their share prices fall to new lows, while only seven managed new share price highs.
North American Gem grabbed top trader status, moving 14 million shares over the session to close down 8 at 31. The Vancouverbased junior received more comfort letters from Saskatchewan Energy and Resources confirming first priority status for 5,665 sq. km of coal permits. The company hit a seam of sub-bituminous-grade coal at its Adamas property in 2007, which went unnoticed until Goldsource Mines made its coal discovery 80 km southeast.
And the market’s thirst for Saskatchewan coal and Prairie potash players is apparently not yet sated. Sidon International Resources, Nordic Diamonds, Western Potash, and Potash North Resource all made the list of the Venture board’s top 10 traders of the week. And Goldsource continued its climb, gaining $1.18 to close at $16.13.
The first drill core of the season out of Hathor Exploration’s Midwest NorthEast project, in the Athabasca basin, showed basement-hosted uranium mineralization over almost 70 metres, a result that propelled the junior’s share price upwards. Hathor gained 26 or 10% over the session to close at $2.86. Terra Ventures holds a 10% carried interest in the Midwest NorthEast property, where Hathor last year hit strong uranium mineralization in what’s now called the Roughrider zone.
Maudore Minerals grabbed far more than its usual share of market attention with news out of its wholly owned Comtois project in western Quebec. Results such as 52.4 grams gold per tonne over 3 metres and 22.1 grams gold over 1.5 metres boosted Maudore 55 or 28% on the last day of the session.
Callinan Mines picked up some new ground near the past-producing Flin Flon and Callinan mines and the producing 777 mine from a private owner. It plans to start ground exploration of the so-called Hamell Lake claims shortly. The news boosted Callinan’s share price 38 to close at $2.30.
Still riding the wave of an initial resource estimate for its Double Eagle property, Noront Resources gained 36 to close at $2.98. The company also inked an option agreement with Passport Metals for the Inner Rim property, another of Noront’s Ring of Fire projects in the James Bay lowlands.
Archangel Diamond, the Canadian junior that recently signed on to earn in almost 50% of the Verkhotina diamond project in northwest Russia, lost 40 to close at $1 on no news. Similarly, New Pacific Metals lost 39 to close at $2.20 on no news.
