Over a short but not so sweet June 24-26 trading session, the S&P-TSX Venture Composite Index lost 50.24 points to close at 2,553.37. Average daily trading volumes were lower than usual, at 81.2 million.
In the space of three days, 17 juniors attained new share price highs but a surprising 167 companies saw their share prices fall to new lows.
Cloudbreak Resources was again the most traded stock on the Venture board; over the short session, 33.4 million Cloudbreak shares changed hands. The activity boosted Cloudbreak’s share price 3 to close at 22. The junior’s rise is based on applications for coal and potash permits in Saskatchewan and Alberta.
Another junior rising on Saskatchewan speculation is North American Gem, which moved 28.5 million shares over the session to close down 4 at 48. The company received more letters from Saskatchewan Energy and Resources assuring first priority status for another 4,440 sq. km of coal permits, bringing its first priority permit ground to 9,000 sq. km.
Other juniors jumping on the Saskatchewan coal and potash area plays did not fare as well this week. Western Potash, which reached $2.15 in mid-June after entering the market in early May at 90, lost 34 to close at $1.51. Two weeks after closing a $25-million private placement, this week Potash North Resource lost 24 to close at $2.81. And jointventure coal speculators Swift Resources and Saturn Minerals also lost ground after weeks of gains.
Largo Resources, which enjoyed a significant and sustained share price gain during most of June, lost 14 to close at $1.34. During the month, Largo closed an $11.5-million financing and began drill programs at its Maracas iron-titanium-vanadium property in Mexico and its Northern Dancer tungstenmolybdenum project in the Yukon.
It was a slow session, relatively, for Goldsource Mines. The rapidly rising junior gained only 65 over the shortened week to close at $18.65. In April, before it discovered coal on its diamond property in Saskatchewan, Goldsource shares were worth some 25.
Without releasing any news Aranka Gold posted a 36 gain to close at $1.20. Similarly, Silverstone Resources managed a 21 lift on no news.
A very short, gold-loaded intercept from the Aquilon Main property in James Bay, Ont., lifted Golden Tag Resources 19 over the session, almost doubling its share price. The company reported 3,231 grams gold per tonne over 80 cm and 12,906.5 grams gold over 20cm, among other intercepts.
A 2-million-oz. gold resource at its Lindero property in northwestern Argentina failed to impress Mansfield Minerals shareholders. The company’s share price slipped 42 over the session to close at $2.60.
And news of “significant occurrences of visible gold” in muck and in situ on the ramp wall at Noront Resources’ Windfall Lake project also failed to impress the market. Noront lost 24 to close at $1.96.
