Tsx Venture Exchange March 14-20

Following last week’s retreat, a buoyant S&P-TSX Venture Composite Index rallied over the March 14-20 session to set new highs, gaining 86.4 points or 3.3%, to close at 2,675.33. Daily trading volumes averaged 73.1 million shares over the period.

The bulls remained strong on the week, with 115 junior exploration companies reaching new 52-week highs, and just 15 sinking to new annual lows.

Hathor Exploration led the junior miners with volume of 18.6 million shares, trading up 81 or 184% to close the week at $1.25. The company is acquiring private company Roughrider Uranium in a share deal, giving Hathor one of the larger landholdings in northern Saskatchewan’s Athabasca basin.

Second-most-active trader was Carpathian Gold, gaining 46% or 13 to close at 41 per share on volume of 11.5 million. Recent drilling on its central-Romanian Rovina licence returned intercepts of up to 100 metres grading 1.1 grams gold per tonne in the porphyry environment.

Another Athabasca basin uranium hunter, Northern Continental Resources, saw over 10.7 million shares change hands, trading up 72% or 18 to close at 43 per share. News of Hathor’s planned acquisition of Northern Continental’s Russell Lake joint-venture partner, Roughrider Uranium, lifted the stock.

Following Antoro Resources’ announcement of plans to option a couple of Quebec uranium projects, the company’s shares doubled to a dime from a nickel on volume of almost 8.2 million.

Posting a 31% gain, Solitaire Minerals closed up 5.5 to 23.5 on volume of over 8.1 million shares. The company has been drilling and acquiring new Red Lake, Ont.-area gold projects. It is also grabbing an iron oxide-copper-gold project in the Great Bear Lake region of the Northwest Territories.

Cantex Mine Development gained a couple of pennies to close at 14.5 on volume of 6.2 million. Reverse-circulation percussion drilling on its Al Hariqah gold project in Yemen recently returned up to 7.5 metres of 12.2 grams gold.

Following its recent acquisition of two uranium projects in Niger, Northwestern Mineral Ventures saw trading volume of 6.2 million shares, but dropped 3 to close at 93.

Harry Barr’s CanAlaska Ventures gained 28%, or 13.5, to close at 62 per share on trading volume of over 6.1 million. It recently closed a $3.1-million financing and expanded its landholdings in the Athabasca basin to over 8,300 sq. km.

Following strong market expectation on its recent Nevada drill program, Staccato Gold lost 22%, or 26, to close the week at 94 per share on volume of 6.1 million. Results from the company’s latest Lookout Mountain drilling returned a wide composite interval of 75.6 metres averaging 0.9 gram gold. Another hole intersected 11.3 metres of 9.7 grams gold.

Shares of Mega Uranium gained $1.75 apiece, to close at $8.61 on volume of 1.2 million. The company recently announced plans to earn into some Bolivian uranium-molybdenum projects.
