The S&P/TSX Venture Composite Index bounced back during the shortened trading period, gaining 2.3%, or 21.60 points, en route to a 950.97-point weekly close. Markets were buoyed by a resolution in the U.S. debt negotiations, as well as positive economic news out of China, where growth rebounded during the second quarter. Precious metals futures were on the rise, while energy and base-metal prices stayed relatively flat.
December contracts for gold bullion jumped 3.5%, or US$44, before closing out the trading period at US$1,315.90 per oz. Crude oil futures struggled, with December contracts for West Texas Intermediate ending the week at US$100.85 after dropping US$1.43 per barrel. December contracts for copper also finished in the red after losing 1.4¢ en route to a US$3.29 per lb. close.
Vancouver-based Cayden Resources lost 26¢ during the trading period before closing at $1.33 per share. On Oct. 16 the company released maiden results from a 25-hole drill program at its El Barqueno gold project in Jalisco State, Mexico. Cayden released assays from four holes collared at its Azteca zone that tested 400 metres of strike length, and all four intersected gold mineralization in the primary Azteca structure. One highlight is 59 metres grading 2.2 grams gold per tonne, 6.2 grams silver per tonne and 0.13% copper from 48 metres depth in hole 2. While drilling at depth Cayden encountered a copper-rich zone that had not been identified during target generation. The zone was discovered when hole 1 intersected 35 metres of 0.41 gram gold, 10.9 grams silver and 0.63% copper from 135 metres depth.
B.C.-focused explorer Barkerville Gold Mines rallied during its second week of trading after it was resumed trading on the Venture exchange in early October. The company gained 15¢ on 2.3 million shares traded during the week before closing at 65¢ per share. On Oct. 16 Barkerville released an update on its Cariboo gold project, which encompasses the Cow Mountain prospect, Bonanza Ledge mine and the QR mine and mill near Quesnel, B.C. The company is addressing inconsistencies in its Cow Mountain technical report that triggered a trading freeze by the B.C. Securities Commission in August 2012. Meanwhile, Bakerville is moving towards commissioning at its QR Mill, and has contracted Snowden Mining Industry Consultants to work on a pit design at its Bonanza Ledge and Barkerville Mountain assets.
