The S&P/TSX Venture Composite couldn’t break out of its funk during the shortened trading week, as it dropped 2.1%, or 17 points, en route to an 810.13-point close. Commodity futures rallied slightly, though energy prices continue to struggle.
Gold futures closed in the green for a second straight week after December contracts for bullion gained US$9 before closing at US$1,239 per oz.
Energy futures are floundering, with December contracts for West Texas Intermediate crude oil dropping 3.4% en route to a US$82.06-per-barrel close.
December contracts for copper lost 1.25%, or US3.8¢, before closing at US$3 per lb.
Kennady Diamonds topped the value-added category during the week by gaining 40¢ on 132,732 shares traded before closing at $5.87 per share. On Oct. 14 the company released a revised tonnage estimate at its Kennady North diamond project in the Northwest Territories after an expansion drill program.
Kennady increased its tonnage guidance for the Kelvin-Faraday kimberlite corridor from between 7 million and 10 million tonnes to 9 million and 12 million tonnes. Since finishing northern drill hole 14-55 — which intersected 215 metres of kimberlite — seven diagonal delineation holes have been drilled along strike of the Kelvin pipe. To date, 15,300 metres have been drilled at the Kelvin kimberlite as part of a 2014 second-half drill program.
West Africa-focused Roxgold had a busy trading week after announcing a $30-million bought-deal financing to advance development at its Yaramoko gold project in Burkina Faso. The company saw 3.7 million of its shares traded as it gained 8¢ en route to a 75¢-per-share close.
On Oct. 14 the company announced it was issuing 46.2 million units at 65¢ each through a dealer syndicate. Each unit consists of a share and half of warrant, with one whole warrant allowing the holder to buy a share for 90¢ within 15 months after the closing.
Great Quest Fertilizer had a strong week after announcing a new operating partner at its Tilemsi phosphate project in northeastern Mali, with the deal also including a financing element. The company jumped 19¢ during the trading period before closing at $1.15 per share.
On Oct. 17 Great Quest reported a partnership with Mali-based Société Africaine de Développement Agricole (SADA) to build and operate its initial Malian production facility. The company and SADA will incorporate a new Malian corporation contributing 67% and 33% of the capital. SADA will buy 95% of the project’s production.
