The main indexes in the United States all saw increases over the June 12-18 trading period. The NASDAQ gained 2%, or 54.45 points, closing at 2,626.6. The Dow Jones Industrial Average added 188.02 points for a 12,612.98 close and the Standard and Poor’s 500 Index rose 1.5% to 1,531.05 points.
The Amex Gold Bugs Index rose about 2.8% to 336.02 points and the price of gold itself rose US$5.70 to US$656 per oz.
The senior gold companies saw improvement as well. Newmont Mining shares increased by US35 and closed at US$40.01. AngloGold Ashanti saw a US23 rise in its share price to US$40.70, while Gold Fields tacked on US20, finishing the period at US$16.34.
Of the smaller producers, Coeur d’Alene Mines, which is in the process of acquiring Bolnisi Gold and Palmerejo Silver and Gold, saw some activity with 29.9 million shares traded. The stock improved by US8 to US$4.74. Hecla Mining saw a US50 boost in its share price, closing the week at US$8.59.
Base metal producers were also on the upswing. Anglo American saw its share price grow by US$1.56 to US$30.87 and BHP Billiton added US$2.51 for a US$58.60 close.
The world’s largest publicly traded copper company, Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold, climbed US$6.08 to US$83.52 after hitting an all-time high of US$84.86 earlier in the period. Freeport was the most active stock over the period with 60.2 million shares traded.
Alcoa was next in terms of activity with 59.7 million shares changing hands, gaining US$2.58 to US$41.88, followed by Companhia Vale do Rio Doce with trading volume of 51.4 million. CVRD shares jumped US$2.70 to US$47.55 over the period, during which time the company signed a 7-year contract with Emirates Steel Industries in Abu Dhabi to supply 500,000 tonnes of iron ore pellets.
Rio Tinto experienced the largest value change over the period with a US$23.53 leap to US$306.25 per share on trading volume of 20.3 million shares. Cleveland-Cliffs saw the biggest loss, dropping US$1.98 to US$77.90.
